Richard Bray, an adventurous individual, left Cornwall for Victoria in 1882. Initially a hack driver, his ambition led to a thriving livery stables business at 728 Johnson St. The premises, once ‘Bunster’s Brewery,’ housed up to 100 horses in the basement and carriages on the ground floor. This marked the start of an extraordinary legacy. Next to the stables, the Bray family resided in a two-story house, deeply woven into the local community with Mary having roots in the Black family and connections to the pioneering Munro family of James Island.
